Mother's Day Mixed Bouquet
Here are 5 Simple Steps to extend
the life of your cut flowers:
»Step 1: Fresh water in a clean vase. Start with a clean vase! I once heard that your flower vase should be clean enough for you to drink from… seems fair, right? Your flowers are trying to take a nice drink. Who wants to drink from a dirty glass?
»Step 2: Add some flower food (optional, but helpful). There is a small packet or two of flower food included here for you. Don’t have any? You can DIY this easily with sugar and white vinegar, which helps inhibit the growth of bacteria. There are many handy guides to this online using ingredients you most likely already have in your home.
»Step 3: Trim those stems. Help your flowers stay hydrated by giving the stems a fresh snip before placing them in their nice clean water. Cutting at a 45-degree angle increases the surface area through which the stem can absorb water and helps them to not sit flat on the bottom of the vase, blocking absorption.
»Step 4: Remove any leaves that fall below the water line. Those bits can rot and create bacteria. Besides, no one likes those slimy leaves anyway.
»Step 5: Change the water every other day. Fresh water ensures your flowers will be able to stay hydrated and will also help reduce any buildup of bacteria in the water.
Additional Tips and Ideas:
»Trying to figure out where to place your beautiful blooms? Avoid placing them in direct light or heat to avoid premature wilting and browning.
»Is your arrangement starting to fade? Remove any faded stems as you see them. Not only will this revive the look of your arrangement, but doing so helps reduce bacteria build-up by not allowing the dead stems to pass bacteria on to the oth¬ers. In that way, the remaining healthy stems can last a little longer.
»And most importantly…. ENJOY!
